The total length of the Xiang'an Submarine Tunnel of Xiamen East Passageway is 8.69 kilometers, of which the length of submarine tunnel is about 6.05 kilometers and the span of waters is about 4.2 kilometers. As the first submarine tunnel in mainland China, its maximum depth is about 70 meters below sea level. Completed and opened to traffic in April 2012, it is a milestone in advancing the progress of tunnel construction technology in China and narrowing the gap with the advanced construction technology of the world's submarine tunnels. It has enhanced China's core competitiveness and innovation capability of participating in international tunnel construction and provided support and demonstration for many large submarine tunnel construction projects.
